The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Right Rug Size for Every Room

Rugs do more than add beauty—they provide comfort, warmth, and define spaces. Whether you have hardwood, tile, or another hard surface, the right rug anchors furniture, creates zones, and ties a room together. Choosing the correct size can be tricky, so we’ve created a room-by-room guide to make it simple.

Bedroom Rug Sizes

A rug in the bedroom should extend 6”-10” beyond the walls of furniture to make the space feel bigger and grounded.

  • King Bed: 9’x12’ sits under bed and nightstands, leaving ~2’ of rug around the bed.
  • Queen Bed: 8’x10’ covers bed and nightstands; 6’x9’ gives an 18” border on each side.
  • Full Bed: 6’x9’ or two 3’x5’ rugs on each side.
  • Twin Beds: 8’x10’, 6’x9’, or 5’x7’ works; runners (2.5’x7’ or 2.5’x10’) between beds are also ideal.

Dining Room Rug Sizes

For dining areas, ensure all chairs sit on the rug, even when pulled out. Leave 8”-12” of floor visible around the rug edges.

  • Large Table (8+): 9’x12’ or 10’x14’
  • Medium Table (6): 8’x10’ or 6’x9’
  • Small Table (4) or Round: 6’x9’ or 8’ round

Living Room Rug Sizes

Common sizes: 8’x10’, 9’x12’, or 10’x14’, depending on room size. Front legs of sofas and chairs should rest on the rug, with at least 6” of rug extending beyond furniture.

Pro Tips for Perfect Rug Placement

  1. Bigger is Better: Slightly larger rugs anchor the room and create a cohesive look.
  2. Read the Room: Match rug size and orientation to room dimensions. Long rooms need rugs following their length.
  3. Visualize First: Use painter’s tape to outline the rug before buying—this ensures proper placement and proportion.
